Furness in Space: New Suburban Landscapes of the Late 19th Century 10/13/12

Furness in Space:New Suburban Landscapes of the Late 19th Century

Frank  Furness  is well recognized for his extraordinary  urban architecture. But he was also quite prolific building houses in the emerging suburban peripheries. There, freed from urban, rectangular constraints,  the  architect  could  employ  different materials  and  visual metaphors. Prof Cohen explores suburban houses by Furness — exteriors, site  and  building plans — comparing his designs to work by his contemporaries.
