MEMBERSHIP MINISTRY TEAM UPDATE
Please consider joining the Membership Ministry team. We make contacts with visitors in order to tell them about our liberal faith and to facilitate their joining First UU church when they have made that decision. We introduce them to the congregation and try to help them become integrated into the life of the church. We also support our new and long-standing members and try to build fellowship and a sense of “ownership” in our congregation. It is very rewarding work. We meet monthly on the first Wednesday, but there are ways to help us even if you can’t make many of our meetings. This year the co-chairs are Eva Baker and Sharon Tomalin.
One of the new projects this fall is the creation of an informative class on the details of First UU Church of Philadelphia. Intended to complement the UU and You meetings, which tell about Unitarian Universalism and some of its history, the new sessions (as yet unnamed) will concentrated on the governance of our specific congregation, our historic building , our finances, the activities, committees and ways to get involved in the life of the church. The membership committee anticipates that many of our “old” members will also be interested in such information.
Another September activity of the Membership ministry is the organization and facilitation of Circle Dinners. Beginning soon, you will be able to sign up for one of these groups of friends, newcomers, and members of First UU. They meet once a month to share a pot-luck meal and get better acquainted. Each circle consists of eight or ten people who meet at one another’s homes over the course of a year. An attempt is made to have a mix of ages and interests. Look for the Circle Dinner flyer and sign-up sheets on the table at the back of the Sanctuary in September. Or e-mail Sharon Tomalin (stomalin AT att.net) for more information.
