Meet the Board of Trustees
Caroline Winschel, President; Daniel Widyono, Vice President; Debby Schultz, Treasurer; Rebecca Ortenberg, Secretary; Trustees-at-Large Erika Parker, Portia Sperr, and Annemarie Vaeni. Ex-officio members of the Board include the Reverend Abbey Tennis, Minister, and Norman Fouhy, Business Administrator.
The Board of Trustees of the First Unitarian Church of Philadelphia is the elected body that governs the congregation. Aware that the members are the highest governing authority, the Board of Trustees relies on a policy-based form of governance to further the work of the church. This means that Trustees govern with an emphasis on the long-term vision and impact of the church, whereas the Ministry Leadership Team manages the administrative and programmatic means of achieving those goals. To learn more about the governance structure, please review our policy documents.
Caroline Winschel, President, is a fourth-generation Unitarian Universalist and grew up in the Unitarian Universalist Church of Greater Bridgeport in Connecticut. She has also been a member of the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Paris and is still in touch with friends from Unirondack. Caroline earned her BA in English and French literature from Smith College in 2009. She then promptly moved to Philadelphia, where she became a member of First Unitarian, earned a master's in English from Penn, and helped found the Chestnut Street Singers, the church's ensemble-in-residence. In addition to serving as Board Vice President from 2013 to 2015, she has sung in the choir, co-chaired the stewardship campaign, run the auction, and led the search for an interim minister.
Daniel Widyono, Vice President, was introduced to Catholicism as a youth, philosophy in high school, psychology in college, and First Unitarian in 1997 (becoming a member in 1998). He has raised his son among the Children's Religious Education family; encouraged ministerial students; participated in and led C.R.E. classes, Adult R.E. classes, technology improvement projects, and Young Adult activities; helped plan and run social gatherings, social justice events, and worship services; served on the Board, Committee on Ministry, and Ministry Leadership Team as well as various task forces, and continues to develop as an amateur musician (and aspiring ukulele enthusiast!) Dan is very excited to share his passion, energy, commitment, and hope for the great work we all are about to undertake in our next transition together. Last but far from least, he is grateful for and owes much to the love and support of his son Vincent and wife Danielle.
Debby Schultz, Treasurer, has been coming to First Unitarian since the mid-70s. Some of her favorite years at First Unitarian were when her two daughters Kate and Liz were avid fans of RE. Debby has been a member of several First U Boards of Trustees, served as President of the Board, actively engaged in RE and Social Justice projects and has spent many fun hours with others in the First Church kitchen.
Debby Schultz was appointed by the Board to serve as treasurer for the balance of the 2016-2017 year, following the dedicated service of Michael Johnson, who resigned the office in December 2016 after serving nearly two full terms in the role. In May 2017, the congregation will elect a treasurer to a new two-year term.
The Congregational Moderator
The Moderator is a non-Board position responsible for serving as the Parliamentarian during congregational meetings. In January 2017, the Board will appoint a moderator to serve for the balance of the 2016-2017 year.
