We are seeking a part-time Religious Educator to lead our younger age group for Kindergarten through 2nd grade, in our Children's Religious Education (CRE) program for the fall and spring semesters 2016-2017. We will provide lesson plans, drawn from Unitarian Universalist curriculum, and all related materials. Prospective teachers with backgrounds in the arts, music, peace, justice or environmentalism are encouraged to apply.
Our CRE Program: Our programming for children and families is designed to promote and affirm the principles and sources of Unitarian Universalism. The CRE Program runs concurrent with worship services from September through June. Our registration includes approximately 20 students, divided between two groups, roughly grades K-2 and grades 3-5. Grades K-2 are lead by the Religious Educator. Grades 3-5 will be lead by the CRE Coordinator. Programming for grade 6 and above will be lead by volunteers, guided by the CRE Coordinator.
Our Congregation: As a Unitarian Universalist congregation, we welcome people who identify with and draw inspiration from Atheism and Agnosticism, Buddhism, Christianity, Humanism, Judaism, Paganism and other religious and philosophical traditions. The CRE Program draws from many sources, including sacred texts and music from all the world's religions and cultures.
Compensation and Hours: $15/hour for 5 hours a week for 35 weeks (paid biweekly). The Religious Educator is expected to work approximately 2.5 hours on Sundays (10:00 AM - 12:30 PM on-site) with 1.5 hours of that time dedicated directly to teaching/interaction with children and families. The remaining 2.5 hours/week are flexible, to be used for preparation and planning, in consultation with the CRE Coordinator and the direct supervisor, the Minister.
Duration: CRE classes meet from 11:00 AM to 12:30 PM from Sunday, September 11, 2016, to June 18, 2017, and will be closed on Sundays November 27, December 25, 2016; and January 1 and May 28, 2017. Other schedule changes may occur as the church year progresses.
Qualifications: Interpersonal skills to successfully manage extensive interactions with a wide range of individuals and groups. Essential qualities include kindness, patience, flexibility, an eye for detail, plus a drama-free approach to problem solving.
Organizational skills and ability to work in a self-directed fashion and as part of a team are essential. Candidates must demonstrate outstanding communication skills, as well as proficiency in MS Office or similar programs. Training in education and experience with Unitarian Universalism is preferred, but someone with comparable experiences may be considered.
