Meet the Religious Education Ministry Team

Diane Frey is a birthright Unitarian Universalist and began attending First Church in the early '80s shortly after she and her husband moved to Philadelphia. Diane has served in many capacities including Beacon editor, chair of the Worship and Religious Education committees and president of the Board of Trustees. For the last ten years she has been most active in the children's and social justice programs. She is currently the liaison for religious education to the Social Justice Ministry Team.

Sarah Lenzi was raised Unitarian Universalist in the congregation of the Unitarian Church of All Souls in New York City. After graduating from Williams College in Art History and Religion, she lived in Dallas, Texas, for a year and worked at Greenhill School as an assistant teacher in the first grade and as co-leader of the middle school after-school program. Sarah received her Masters of Divinity degree from Harvard Divinity School, did a unit of Clinical Pastoral Education in Knoxville, Tennessee and is currently completing her Ph.D. program at the UPenn. Sarah recently served the church as its Young Adult Ministry Coordinator and is sponsored by the church to become an ordained Unitarian Universalist minister. Sarah works closely with Erick on pastoral matter related to religious education.

Amanda Owings, Chair  was raised in the Unitarian Universalist Society of Iowa City. In her time there, she was a nursery school teacher for 12 years, participated in the young adult group, and started the campus group that is currently there. She is still exploring and defining her own beliefs, but she is studying all faiths and keeping an open mind. She also incorporates science in her faith by trying to understand how the world and everything on it came to be, while trying to keep in mind that anything is possible. She also tries to bring the 7 principles into her every day life. Amanda received her Bachelor of Science from the University of Iowa in 2006 in evolutionary biology. She is currently working in a molecular anthropology lab studying human evolution and helping to trace the path of human movements throughout the world using genetic analysis. In her spare time, she enjoys swimming, playing her cello, volunteering at animal shelters, and scrapbooking.
