Even after today, the last day of the 40/40 challenge, my family will continue to take a moment of grace before every meal together. We have not succeeded in doing so all 40 days, but the effort has built up a momentum which we have found to enrich our time together, and our appreciation for what we have, and those in our lives. The most uplifting moment for me during these meals together was when we nearly forgot to say grace at one meal, and it was my son Vincent who reminded us. It is a blessing to be in the company of love, gratitude, and earnest faith in each other.
Forgot to mention my favorite activity so far. On Tuesday, I spent 3 wonderful hours in the woods cleaning up trash along Crum Creek.
The high points for days 6-11: the whole family's been eating breakfast together; planted veggie seeds (Swiss chard) in the garden for the first time in 3 years; received the first CSA delivery of the season!!!
Think that I have successfully left Diet Coke for Diet Green Tea - now to find unsweetened Green Tea - diet is a little too sweet for me.
Also glad to have participated in Reconcilement and Peace Walk.
Soy milk versus almond milk - have always done soy but now see more of you all are going almond - be interested why the choice made.

Here's a first. On the first day of Earth Day challenge my partner challenged me to buy vegan shoes and a vegan wallet from Alternative Outfitters. Well, they arrived. And look, you can't even tell the difference. It feels to be in a supportive relationship and a supportive community that's helping me think about my purchasing power. It's been fun voting with my fork and voting with my dollar. Happy day.

Day 5: The new breakfast routine is going so well, that I've decided to take on another challenge - no chocolate for 40 days. This will be tough!
My vice - This is not easy for me but I know it is the ultimate junk food and contains a long list of ingredients that I cannot even pronounce - so not more Ring Dings for forty - who knows - may be able to give them up permanently.
Day 3 (4/24): ate breakfast w/ B again; bought fair-trade organic coffee and bulk organic brown rice.
Day 4 (4/25): Mother-son breakfast again; added coffee grounds, veggie scraps, and shredded fall leaves to the compost.

Day 3. Fiber cereal with almond milk. Lunch, vegan-chicken mango chutney pancake from Philadelphia Chutney Co. with diet green tea Snapple, glass bottle. I asked for no cheese but it came with some sprinkled on top. I didn't return it, so it became my one non-vegan dish. Snacks: nut trail mix and Madeline orange (from CA, oops). Dinner: yummy Indian food leftovers. A day of flavorful dishes.
Today we walked to school and I took septa to work. Landon actually is starting to really love the Almond milk. I'll start buying it regularly, though I am concerned that it doesn't have the same protein as cow's milk. Much better in terms of fat and calcium though. The boys picked-up task outside after school and I served a meat-free dinner.

Day 3 with no bacon (it is usually part of my breakfast routine and one of the only processed meat products that I eat with any regularity) and also thinking more about food production (and specifically meat) by reading Singer and Mason's The Way We Eat: Why Our Food Choices Matter. Lots to ponder...
