First Unitarian Church of Philadelphia ~ Welcome home!

40/40 Earth Day Challenge

Are you ready to take the 40/40 challenge? Here are three steps to take.

  • ACT. Take one small or large action on each of the 40 days, starting Earth Day, Sunday, April 22, 2012 through May 31, 2012.
  • REFLECT. Each day, call (828) REV-NATE to leave a message archiving your experience (you can call 24/7). We'll share your message on this audio blog.
  • RESPOND. Then Listen to others talk about their experiences and use the comment box below to type an encouraging reply.

That's it! Let the games begin. I'm looking forward to learning from you all. Peace, Rev. Nate

Yeah, Katherine. The secret to a good meal is indeed found in color. And thanks Justine. I just placed my call. I testified at the EPA hearing in January on this very issue: http://www.natewalker.com/events/epa-testimony

Do NOW: Are you a Pennsylvania resident? If so, Call Senator Casey NOW (215-405-9660) and ask him to support the EPA's new carbon pollution standards. When you get Casey's recording, leave your name and address. This is important 40/40/40 challengers! Lets flood his office with calls and get the EPA's recommended standards passed.

Day 2: I'm off to a movie with my honey and wondering how not to have diet coke. Maybe bring my own mineral water in a glass bottle? The buttered popcorn is my one non-vegan dish for the day.

I'm loving the messages: Lora prioritized sharing a meal with her family; Peggy used cold rather than hot water for her laundry; Anne Marie joined a CSA. What fun!

Day 1 (yesterday):  Declined to eat a favorite animal product -- ice cream!

Day 2:  Rearranged my morning routine in order to eat breakfast with B before school.

You're creating life-long family memories, Justine! You're an amazing mother!

I love the 40/40 challenge almost as much as my boys! Landon came home from school on Friday adamant that no one should drive on Earth Day, so we decided he would bike to church. He was so disappointed when we went outside and he saw other people driving their cars! Landon has lots of ideas about how to take care of the Earth and is gung-ho for the 40/40 challenge. Tomorrow we're trying almond milk. Oh please let it be good, because the uphill ride home from the church in the rain was not easy.

Hi Nate!  I came home from church and made a delicious vegan lemon-kale pesto on pasta for lunch!  (I made it up).  Wish you were here!  Love, Katherine
