Event Description

Community Forum: Let's End Cash Bail in Philadelphia

Thursday, April 6th, 7:00 PM, Sanctuary

Join community members and city leaders for an informative panel discussion regarding Philadelphia’s cash bail system.  Evidence shows the cash bail system does not work. Panel members will discuss what can be done to improve the system. With the recent award of a $3.5 million MacArthur Grant to the city, there is a unique opportunity to revamp the current model.

Cash bail does not ensure the public safety. It is also unconstitutional to retain someone in jail simply because they do not have the means to pay. Keeping low-income individuals to await trial disrupts employment, stresses families and often results in evictions.  At this forum, two Philadelphia residents, Reuben Jones and Joshua Glenn, whose lives were severely impacted by this system, will present their stories.

Councilman Curtis Jones who is leading the charge to address this issue and Chief Public Defender Keir Bradford Grey will share their insights into the work being done to reform cash bail in Philadelphia. Clifford T. Keenan, the Director of Pre-Trial Services in Washington, D.C., will discuss that city’s successful program to end cash bail.

Patrick Egan will be the moderator.
