People across the continent are expanding the 42nd Earth Day (Sunday, April 22, 2012) to last 40 days, to May 31. How? By committing to small and large daily actions over the 40 days, for environmental justice, food justice, and immigration justice. People are taking small lifestyle changes for 40-day “test drives” knowing that our personal choices affect many aspects of global justice.

The practice began with Unitarian Universalism, and many UU congregations plan to participate in 2012. When 40 people in one congregation make 40-day commitments, that congregation receives special acknowledgement from a UUA President's Advisory Committee. (If 40 seems too ambitious—or not ambitious enough!—a congregation can substitute 40% of average worship attendance and still receive recognition).

Are you ready to take the 40/40 challenge? Here are three steps to take.

  • ACT. Take one small or large action on each of the 40 days, starting Earth Day, Sunday, April 22, 2012 through May 31, 2012.
  • RESPOND. Then Listen to others talk about their experiences and use the comment box below to type an encouraging reply.

That's it! Let the games begin. I'm looking forward to learning from you all. Peace, Rev. Nate
