Event Description

In honor of the one-year anniversary of the death of Mark DeCourval, members of the First Unitarian Church of Philadelphia will conduct a posthumous ordination ceremony of Mark DeCourval on Sunday, December 1, 2013 at 12:30 pm in the Parish Room.

Mark DeCourval was born in Flint, Michigan on June 8, 1941. It was here that he spent his formative years, and later on as a family man raising a son and three daughters. He arrived in Philadelphia while serving in the Navy. After being honorably discharged Mark spent fifty years working in Philadelphia and surrounding communities, most notably as vice president in Information Retrieval and Delivery Systems for Philadelphia National bank, that later became The Bank of Wachovia.

Earning both Bachelor and Masters degrees from Drexel University, Mark graduated from Union Theological Seminary with a Master of Divinity in May 2012. His Masters of Divinity brought  him closer to his long held dream of becoming an ordained minister that began in high school. As an active member of First Unitarian Church Mark’s presence made a huge impact on the congregation and the community. He served on the Ministry Membership Team as a regular greeter and usher, as well as a Worship Associate, delivering sermons that were well received.

Mark also served on the Ministry Leadership Team. He revitalized the Caring Ministry Team where he created a core of Caring Associates to officiate the Sharing of Names during worship service. He also created a system where Caring Associates regularly visit the homebound and sick, delivering food, and soliciting donations for medical supplies such as walkers. Last fall Mark began serving as Ministerial Intern with Rev. Virginia Jorocha-Ernst at the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Monmouth County in Lincroft, New Jersey, and was in candidate status with the Unitarian Universalist Association.

Mark is survived by one sister Linda Williams, of Florida, and daughters Varinia Lynee Scharrer, Tamera Caroline Hardin, Kimberley Darlene Carter and son Stephan Mark DeCourval all of Flint, Michigan.
