Event Description

Each year approximately 35,000 individuals who have been incarcerated in federal, state, and local correctional facilities return to their families and neighborhoods in the City of Philadelphia. For these men and women, who are often referred to as “Returning Citizens,” the journey of redemption and reintegration is arduous and challenging. The Center for Returning Citizens (TCRC) seeks to facilitate a successful transition for those who wish to begin a new life, transform themselves into productive citizens, and never return to prison. J. Jondhi Harrell, who returned to society in 2009 after serving an 18 year federal sentence, is the founder and Executive Director of TCRC. He earned an Associates degree behind the walls, a B.S. in Human Service Management upon release, and is currently enrolled in the Temple University Master of Social Work program. Jondhi Harrell will be speaking about TCRC, his personal experiences, and his role in organizing the Movement to End Mass Incarceration. TCRC is the center of the movement to forge the hundreds of thousands of returning citizens in the city of Philadelphia and across the state into a collective, effective coalition. This movement seeks to empower, educate, and organize returning citizens into a cultural, social, political, and economic force. Under his leadership, TCRC as an organization offers services which comprehensively and effectively address the unique issues of formerly incarcerated individuals. Mr. Harrell’s goal is to develop this organization into a national model for re-entry and organize a movement which will effectively combat the effects of mass incarceration.
