Space Is Limited - Send your Application Today!
In 2013 Training for Change is leading our fourth year of the Philadelphia Organizing Skills Institute, a program for people doing campus and community-based organizing work that want to deepen their skills and strengthen the projects or campaigns they are working on.
The Organizing Skills Institute consists of three weekend-long training sessions over the course of a few months along with 2 hours of personalized coaching time with an experienced organizer.
This year we strongly encourage people to apply in teams of two or more, from the same organization or project, we’ve found this greatly increases your support to apply what you learn!
At the Organizing Skills Institute, you will:
· Be introduced to various frameworks, principles and training tools meant to support effectiveness in building your group, developing a strategy for your organization and planning events or tactics that move you closer to your goals.
· Hear stories and experience about what works in practice, how change happens and how various groups have approached dilemmas in their organizing work.
· Practice many of the foundational skills that organizers need – such as one-on-one meetings, event planning, meeting facilitation, media work, and developing strategies for personal and organizational sustainability.
· Get the chance to network and connect with others doing social justice projects around the region and take home a bunch of new tools and activities to use with your own group.
The schedule of the training is:
February 15-17: Identifying your style as an organizer, building a strong group, facilitation, and theories of change.
March 23-25: Core organizing principles, tactic design, strategy & campaign planning, workshop challenges or significant questions in your work.
April 19-21: Personal & organizational sustainability, handling conflict in groups, campaign case study and remaining skills!
Each weekend runs from Friday 6:30 pm-9:30 pm, Saturday 10:00 am-6:00 pm, Sunday 10:00 am-3:00 pm. Meals provided.
We do require an application for this workshop. We accept people at varying levels of experience and on a range of issues – we’ve worked with organizers who are working on immigrant rights, housing rights, food justice, HIV/AIDS activism, and more! This year we are giving strong preference for people who apply in teams of two or more from the same organization or project, we’ve found this greatly supports your ability to apply what you learn.
