Wedding Party!

My wife Danielle and I would like to celebrate our marriage to each other, with our First Unitarian Church family. We're holding a potluck party here at First UU on Sunday May 26th at 2pm, downstairs in Griffin Hall, with karaoke and card games! We hope you can join us in community, music, and joy.

Please bring some food or drink to share... and please do not bring gifts otherwise. If you wish, you can make a donation out to First Unitarian Church in our names.

Change of Dates: Synergy Sundaes

Greetings to all, especially to leaders who attend the Synergy Sundae leadership workshops:

Due to overwhelming demand the Board has changed the dates of the next two Synergy Sundaes.  Instead of January 20, the next Synergy Sundae will occur on Sunday, February 10. Instead of March 17, the following Synergy Sundae will occur on Sunday, March 24. This change supersedes the information found in the January Beacon.

Happy New Year!

Attitude of Gratitude: THANK YOU First UU Staff!

The Board agreed with Norman Fouhy, your acting Executive Director, and his recommendations for distributing the holiday bonuses. We have been unanimously impressed with the excellent professionalism and ability to rise up to new challenges exhibited by the staff during this sabbatical period, and the contributions raised toward the holiday…

Happy Thanksgiving!

I am extremely grateful for the joy that the choir brings to our community.  I was moved to tears yesterday at their fall Music Sunday concert where they performed Carmina Burana. This emotion was evoked partly by the beauty of the piece, partly by the pride in their accomplishments, and partly knowing that I have the opportunity just to be with them.  I am thankful for them sharing their time: being there for and with each…

Sunday morning marathon traffic

If you are driving in to Church on Sunday, plan your trip and parking ahead.  The Philadelphia Marathon takes place that morning!  The runners will be running by the Church between miles 6 and 7, which by my estimation translates to between 7:30am and 9am.  However, your route into West Center City may be blocked.

Road closures:

Hurricane Sandy UU Disaster Relief Fund

Dear First Unitarian Church of Philadelphia,

As you know, Hurricane Sandy has caused wide spread devastation along the Mid Atlantic coast in New Jersey, New York, Connecticut, and as far as eastern Ohio this past week. Many people are still without basic necessities such as warm clothes, blankets, shoes, food (perishables and non-perishables), cleaning supplies, batteries/flashlights and lanterns, demolition tools (pry bars, sledge hammers, garbage bags), etc. Several of our…

Don't forget to turn your clocks back one hour this Sunday morning!  You will have one extra hour of sleep before service begins with our guest minister Rev. Dan Schatz.

We picked fruit from trees we did not plant

Today, on this very beautiful Saturday afternoon, my family joined others in picking apples from Linvilla Orchards' trees.  We are grateful for their service, for their tending to the orchards, for the sunshine that gives nourishment to the apple trees, for the staff who enable such an event, and for Rachel who brought this about!

We all had an awesome time,…

An open letter to First UU

Dear First Unitarian Church of Philadelphia,

For sixteen years, I have loved you as a family, actively participated as a member, gotten to know many of you, and came to learn this family's dynamics as I matured. Now, as President of the Board of Trustees, I will not simply see you as individuals, but rather as the Congregation of First UU, with a capital C. I am here to serve the needs of the Congregation as a whole, to serve our shared values.

Over these past sixteen years, we…

Why I Give to First Unitarian Church

Happy New Year!  This blog post is the written version of the reflection I gave this morning at church, which answered the question posed to me recently, “Why do you give to the church?”  At first, I thought it would be easy to sum it up in three minutes of talking. After several hours of editing out so much, here is my final reply!

First, I need to explain what “church” means to me.  Church means: being in community with each and every one of you; challenging and fun choir…
