First U is taking the Food Stamp Challenge from January 7-13, 2013!
The Food Stamp Challenge asks individuals and families to eat on the budget of those who receive benefits through the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) – aka food stamps – for just one week.
For one person, the Food Stamp Challenge budget for the week is $35, or $5 per day – the average food stamp benefit for a person living in Philadelphia. Visit www.hungercoalition.org/foodstampchallenge/guidelines for more information about how to take the challenge, and budgets for different household sizes.
If you think you might be eligible for SNAP, you can apply by calling the Coalition Against Hunger’s Food Stamp Hotline at (215) 430-0556. A counselor can tell you if you qualify, help you apply by phone, or direct you to the nearest County Assistance Office where you can apply in person. You can also apply online at www.compass.state.pa.us.
Pledge cards were handed out during the service on January 6, but you can still take the challenge without one! Bring your completed pledge card back to the Social Justice Ministry Team table on Sunday, January 13, or pick one up that morning, to share your experience taking the Challenge and contribute what you've learned to our church community!
