The First Unitarian Church is a dynamic and growing Congregation & Community Center that hires highly motivated, positive, flexible, self-directed and collaborative professionals – qualities sought in the next Communications Director.
Duties: As head of all church communications, the Director is responsible for producing and distributing all unique and recurring literature such as fliers, signs, brochures, orders of service, announcements, as well as the weekly e-newsletters and monthly printed newsletter. The Director manages the database for church membership, attendance and programs; collaborates with the Business Administrator to manage the master calendars; supervises a number of volunteers with varying skill levels to complete administrative projects; prepares mass mailings, promotional material and advertising; edits sermons and uses video and audio devices to record worship services; and maintains the content on the church website. As the primary administrative support for the church office, the Communications Director responds to numerous inquiries via phone and email from members, visitors, renters and the wider community. Additional office duties include filing, invoice preparation and mailing, and purchasing/restocking office supplies. The weekly schedule is open to negotiation; however, it is required that the Communications Director open the church office every Sunday from 9 am to 2 pm. During this time, the Director presents verbal announcements during the worship service, meets with members and visitors, and processes their contact-information, pledge payments and book sales.
Qualities: As the face of communications for the church, the Director must possess superior interpersonal skills to successfully manage the extensive interaction with a wide range of individuals and groups. Essential qualities include kindness, patience, flexibility, clear communication, a high degree of cleanliness and organization, an eye for detail, plus a drama-free approach to problem solving. Candidates must demonstrate outstanding editing/proofing and writing skills, as well as proficiency in MS Word, Excel, Access, and Publisher or other design programs. In addition, experience with social networking and online communication tools such as Facebook and MailChimp are required.
