With the meeting on March 25 to select a new theme for the FirstUU social justice concentration, you might be wondering just what will happen to the projects created under the “old” Education/Literacy theme. They won’t be dropped; they’ll continue under the aegis of the Social Justice Ministry Team as on-going projects. In fact, as an indication of their continuing interest and support, the SJMT has recently adopted two expansions of the Reading Buddies project!
In addition to the Andrew Jackson School connection, we will have some volunteers assisting at the Little Miracles Preschool and Daycare program at the FirstUU church. This outreach will take place on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4:00 – 6:00 PM. Some of the children will come from Greenfield School as part of Little Miracles’ after-school program, others will be of pre-school age.
In a second project, SJMT has received a request to form a team of academic coaches to travel together to AchieveAbility near 61st and Market, probably once a week in the evening or weekend. AA is a social service agency whose clients are families (mostly women and their children) who have been homeless and unemployed. The students will be adults planning to enter community college next fall, and the agency wants to give them some skills practice before that time.
SJMT member Sharon Tomalin has been a tutor at the agency for several years now. Please call her if you want more information or to volunteer for either of these projects. email@example.com - 215-735-5047
