The First Unitarian Church of Philadelphia, a Unitarian Universalist Congregation, is seeking part-time Lead Teachers for our Sunday School for the fall and spring semesters 2015-2016.
Our Religious Education Program: Our programming for children and families is designed to promote and affirm the principles and sources of Unitarian Universalism. The Sunday School runs concurrent with worship services from September through June. Our registration includes approximately 20 students, equally divided between two groups, roughly grades K-3 and 4-7.
We will provide lesson plans, drawn from Unitarian Universalist curriculum, and all related materials. Prospective teachers with backgrounds in the arts, music, peace, justice, or environmentalism are encouraged to apply.
Congregation:As a Unitarian Universalist congregation, we welcome people who identify with and draw inspiration from Atheism and Agnosticism, Buddhism, Christianity, Humanism, Judaism, Paganism, and other religious and philosophical traditions. The Religious Education program draws from many sources, including sacred texts and music from all the world's religions and cultures.
Compensation and Hours: $15 an hour for 5 hours a week for 35 weeks (paid biweekly).
Lead Teachers are expected to work approximately 3 hours on Sundays (10:o0 AM - 12:30 PM onsite, with 1.5 hours dedicated directly to teaching/interaction with children and families). The remaining hours are flexible, to be used for preparation and planning, in consultation with the Religious Education Coordinator and the direct supervisor, the Interim Minister. Religious Education classes meet from 11 am to 12:30 pm from Sundays, September 13, 2015, to June 12, 2016, and will be closed on Sundays September 27, November 29, December 27, 2015; and January 3 and May 29, 2016.
Qualifications:Interpersonal skills to successfully manage the extensive interaction with a wide range of individuals and groups. Essential qualities include kindness, patience, flexibility, clear communication, a high degree of organization, an eye for detail, plus a drama-free approach to problem solving. Ability to work as part of a team is essential. Candidates must demonstrate outstanding communication skills, as well as proficiency in MS Office or similar programs. Training in education and experience with Unitarian Universalism is preferred, but someone with comparable experiences may be considered.
